First look

A draft version of the document that will guide the creation of Marine Conservation Zones is now available.

The document, known as the Ecological Network Guidance, can be downloaded from the websites of either Natural England or the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC).

The guidance is the central document in the process of recommending Marine Conservation Zones, including in the Irish Sea.

It is Natural England’s and JNCC’s statutory advice on what is required to meet the design principles of the government’s wider Marine Protected Area network, as well as the objectives for the selection of individual Marine Conservation Zones.

Natural England and JNCC are sharing the draft guidance with people to request comments that will help ensure that the final version is as clear and understandable as possible.

The final version of the guidance is expected to be available from June.
